5. Nobu's Footprints in Fukuoka

I’m Finally Here!

Greetings everyone! My name is Nobuo Gondo, and I am pleased to inform you that I will be following up Emiko’s work as a column writer for the Rainbow Magazine. While I am still jet-lagged from the long 10-hour flight from Vancouver, I am keeping myself busy by adapting to the new life in Fukuoka in full swing!
Before jumping into all the shocking things that I’ve been exposed to since my arrival at the Fukuoka International Airport (i.e. humid summer heat, endless line-ups for passport checks, amazing soft drinks etc), I would like to take this opportunity to briefly introduce my background and hometown in Canada. I am a third-generation Korean-Japanese-Canadian, and I spent my childhood in Kobe and most of my youth in the harbor city of Vancouver, which is located in the very west coast of the country facing the Pacific Ocean.
You can find a number of wild animals (i.e. black bears, elks, deer, raccoons etc.) roaming back and forth between the residential areas and mountainous rocky terrains throughout the year, except during the winter season when most of the animals are dead asleep. Yet, the howling sounds of coyotes at night warn the residents to hide under their pillows (the sounds awoke me especially during the nights of the full moon).
The city is pretty much dwelt by a diverse mix of people with various ethnic backgrounds. This means that there are wide food selections available for the hungry local gourmets. Among them are: Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Indian, Italian, and Greek, which are all common options for dining. My personal favorite is the Vietnamese noodles, or “Pho”. It is a type of hot noodle soup with vegetables and meat that is both affordable and healthy, and it was the perfect dish to eat during my student years; you will be hooked on it in no time! I hear Fukuoka is also popular for their noodle dishes such as Tonkotsu Ra-men and Nagasaki Champon, and I just cannot wait to dip my chopsticks into the bowls at one of the food stalls or Yatai you see popping out at nights on the side of the streets.
This is actually my second time in Fukuoka, and I am very excited to experience a new life in a globalized, and welcoming, environmentally friendly community. I recently graduated from the University of British Columbia this past May with a major in resource economics, and concentrated my studies in sustainable agriculture. That being said, I am filled with ambition to explore different types of local food, not only in the city, but also across the Kyushu Island, and it would be in my best interest to write a column or so related to this topic to you all!
Needless to say, this would be my first job as a column writer, so I am not very confident as to whether I could write an interesting piece (as my predecessors have done in the past), but I will do my best to inform something a little different and exciting each month; so please do not hesitate to bombard me with any questions, comments, or suggestions that you may have. You can find my contact just below the page. As my predecessor has done in her introduction column, I will also add two links to a map of Vancouver (URL: http://www.vancouverisland.com/Maps/?id=2 and URL: http://www.vistascene.com/currentThemeMap.html) coupled with a link to a city homepage (URL: http://www.vancouver.com/index.htm) so that you get a feel of where I come from. Perhaps I shall begin looking for a cool topic to share for the October issue before melting like butter from this extreme summer heat. Until then, drink a lot of water and don’t forget to put on your sunscreen and shades before heading out!
