The Four Seasons

With summer long gone, autumn in season, and winter fast approaching, I have sensed that Japan’s seasonal change highlights wonderful things other than chilly wind, Pacific typhoons and tropical storms that sweep across the nation during the months of September and October. Perhaps this is quite evident when you walk into a supermarket and find many different kinds of seasonally-limited fruits, seafood, and vegetables that pique your curiosity, or when you take a walk outside and see the palette of green, rouge, and golden leaves of late autumn.
The so-called “Shiki” or the “Four Seasons” has known to bring distinct climatic patterns across the archipelago of Japan due to the East Asian monsoon, extratropical cyclone, seasonal rain fronts, etc. occurring throughout the year. Thus, resulting in cold and dry weather in the winter, and hot and humid weather in the summer—all of which create peculiar qualities to Japan’s natural resources.
In particular, some will regard “fall” in Japan as “Aki no Mikaku”, simply because there’s plenty of goodies available during this time. For example, highly praised matsutake mushrooms, sugary chestnuts, sweet potatoes, mellow pears, bright oranges, and persimmons are some of the popular ones, and they are usually harvested from early September. As soon as these food hit the shelves in the market, I can hardly refrain myself from buying them and binging on those fantastic selections of natural bounty—though eating matsutake might make me stone-broke after. For those seafood lovers, lightly salted and grilled sanma or Pacific saury is also the delicacy of the season or as they call it “shun”, and it’s a perfect dish eaten with hot sake. Moreover, sanma contains rich sources of nutrition such as vitamin B2, vitamin D, Calcium, Iron, Dehydroacetic acid, and Eicosapentaenoic acid; in particular, the last two nutrition have been known to improve your memory and academic performance by activating your brain, while also preventing you from getting arteriosclerosis and thrombus. In other words, this katana-shaped fish—the name sanma “秋刀魚” literally means “Autumn-Katana-Fish”—satisfies the condition for the proverb, “isseki nichou” or “kill two birds with one stone”, for your IQ may unknowingly rise while you regale on them.
Another beauty of shiki is reflected in the koyo or crimson foliage of Japan. Usually during this season, holiday seekers will plan for a trip up the mountains to witness the breath-taking scenes of colorful mosaic leaves and to soak deep in steaming natural hot springs—a supreme plan for those wishing to be fully indulged with the Japanese spirit. Similarly, Vancouver also has vast koyo of its own, as abundant maple trees covering the mountains will gradually turn into amber and scarlet colours, whispering the wild animals to prepare for the cold winter ahead. In my hometown Port Moody, families of black bears will often appear in the middle of the night and prowl around the garbage cans for scraps of fruits and vegetables, indicating that winter is just around the corner. For this reason, morning clean up is always a “seasonal headache” in my neighbourhood.
I have discovered that Japanese lifestyle revolves around the four seasons not only in its climate, but also in its gift from nature, which they derive their immediate pleasures from. As I embark on a journey from south to north (assuming I have sufficient time and money to do so) throughout the year, I anticipate learning more about the unique food, lifestyle, and culture that are present in each region. The only concern is gaining a few pounds…
