5. Nobu's Footprints in Fukuoka

Domo, sumimasen

If you've lived in this country long enough, you'll know that some of its languages such as "domo" and "sumimasen" are frequently used in a number of situations. While they are often used together as in "domo sumimasen" to express one's sincere apology to others, they can be spoken individually to indicate a whole range of different meanings. Let me give you several different circumstances where the above is true.
Domo: I guess this is one of the first Japanese words any foreigner can learn as it's not all too difficult to enunciate or master its complete use. Meaning "much" or "very" in literal context, it's an informal way of saying "thank you" to those who deserve, and is also used as a greeting to say a casual "hey" or "hello" to someone whom you meet in your neighbourhood or at the office.
You may wonder how Japanese people differentiate such word in different situations, for both of them usually require a customary bow upon saying the word. From what I've seen and heard, people usually repeat the word twice if they are greeting as in "domo, domo…," or just a single "domo" if they are giving an appreciative comment to others.
However, when talking to others over the phone, this single domo (to mention "thank you") is almost never heard or becomes incomplete unless you are using it for greeting purposes, in which case, it must be followed by your name such as "domo, Gondo desu." Hence, a complete phrase of "domo arigatogozaimasu" or "domo sumimasen" will be ideal during a phone conversation to specify its full meaning, for just saying "much" or "very" wouldn't get you that far, where in a person-to-person scenario, it's a different story.
Sumimasen: While this is a commonly used word for saying "excuse me", "sorry" or "my apologies" to others in Japan, it also shares a similar meaning with that of "domo", that is, saying "thank you". For example, when a Japanese person receives a gift in Japan especially at a formal setting, the very first word you often hear coming out of the person's mouth is "sumimasen". This is highlighted in the following example.
Gift giver: "Kore tsumaranai mono desuga, douzo."
"It's nothing too big, but here you go!"
Gift receiver: "A, sumimasen, arigatogozaimasu."
"Oh, I'm sorry, but thank you."
While the above English translation may not necessarily reflect the understanding of true Japanese people, for foreigners who have just arrived in Japan, receiving such a comment after giving a gift may make them wonder why the gift receiver was apologizing when he/she has done nothing wrong. To my understanding, this is just one politeness of the Japanese in which they say "sorry" to extend further consideration to those who have went out of their way to prepare a gift.
Although it's contradicting, when you hear "sumimasen" in such a scenario, don't take it as an apology, but instead, think of it as an extra "thank you" for your service. In that sense, this word can be used in place of the long and formal "arigatogozaimasu" to express your appreciation casually, and for that matter, you can even say "domo sumimasen" to imply a more formal gratitude towards others.
