5. David's Hakata Highlights

Right now it's the middle of tsuyu, or the rainy season. In Fukuoka, tsuyu begins in June and continues through to mid-late July. As I normally ride my bike to get around town, I have to catch buses a lot more frequently than I would like to around this time of year. I'm sure I will end up buying a few umbrellas too because I know I'll leave them somewhere and forget about them.
This is a problem that I have only ever had while living in Japan. In Australia, I rarely used an umbrella. Between my family of five people, we probably only own two or three umbrellas. If it rains, we just put up with it or avoid it all together. This probably sounds quite odd to most Japanese people. But in terms of umbrella usage, it's not as if my family and I are the odd ones out. Sure, my family is pretty weird, but in general, people seem to use umbrellas a lot less in Australia than here in Japan.
But then, where I am from in Australia ? Canberra ? there is no rainy season. Indeed, the annual rainfall for Canberra is roughly a third of Fukuoka's. When it does rain, usually it doesn't last for very long. Why carry an umbrella around all day if it's only going to rain for ten minutes? And unlike Japan, which generally has excellent public transport, most people get around by car and are never too far from their vehicle. This is another reason not to carry around an umbrella.
Perhaps one more reason that umbrellas are less common is that we can't buy new ones for a couple of dollars like you can in Japan. Anyone can buy a \500 umbrella at a convenience store here. And convenience stores are everywhere. Almost all the limited number of convenience stores in Canberra are attached to petrol stations. People only really go to petrol stations when they are driving, so there's not much reason for these businesses to sell umbrellas.
After chatting with my colleagues about their experiences overseas, it seems that perhaps Japan is the one with the exceptional umbrella habits. Even with just the slightest bit of rain, many people here will open up their umbrellas. It doesn't even need to be raining. You almost never see anyone using a parasol in Australia. Perhaps we could learn a bit from Japan's parasol habit. After all, you can never be too sun-smart.
